SITES-M Project
The SITES-M project (Strengthening Instruction in Tennessee Elementary Schools- Focus on Mathematics) is operated through a grant from the State of Tennessee in conjunction with ETS (Educational Testing Services). Local partners in the program are Knoxville College and Maynard Elementary School. The program is specific to HBCUs in the state. In addition to Knoxville College, Fisk, Lane, Lemoyne-Owen, and Tennessee State are represented, each with a partner elementary school.
Each partnership has a director, a program coordinator, college faculty advisors, the school principal, and elementary level teachers representing grades K-4.
This project is designed to help elementary educators in mathematics gain insight into various methods for presentation of materials in their classrooms. It consists of weekly meetings for classroom instructors, a workshop for each HBCU, and a two week summer institute for the participants.
KC student participation in the SITES-M project involves assisting in the workshop and helping with special classroom activities at Maynard. These activities are a part of the KC Work Program. Students gain experience and knowledge in elementary education in addition to providing a community service for children needing assistance in mathematics.
