Honoring the Legacy of Robert J. Booker ’53 – Knoxville’s Civil Rights Trailblazer

It is with deep respect and reverence that we remember Robert J. Booker, an Austin High School Class of 1953 graduate, beloved historian, and civil rights icon, who passed away at the age of 88. His life was a testament to courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Booker’s journey began at Austin High, where his thirst for knowledge and sense of purpose first took root. Following graduation, he served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in England and France. Upon his return, he enrolled at the historically Black Knoxville College under the GI Bill, majoring in English and earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1962. It was there—at Knoxville College—where Booker’s leadership and activism came to life.

In 2022, Booker reflected, “When I was elected president of the student government at Knoxville College 63 years ago, I had no idea how it would change my life.” And change it did—not only his life but the trajectory of civil rights in Knoxville.

As a two-term student body president, Booker led sit-in protests that helped desegregate local lunch counters and played a vital role in the integration of the historic Tennessee Theatre in 1963. His bravery and leadership during those pivotal years made him a cornerstone of Knoxville’s Civil Rights Movement and earned him a place among the city’s most honored historical figures.

Beyond activism, Robert J. Booker was Knoxville’s most revered African American historian. He spent decades preserving the stories of Black East Tennesseans, chronicling the vibrant history of the community he loved so deeply. His books, lectures, and civic contributions brought visibility to generations of overlooked voices, ensuring that their stories would never fade.

Booker's unwavering dedication to civil rights and to telling the truth of our shared past will resonate for generations. He was more than a leader—he was a beacon of hope, a fierce advocate for equality, and a proud graduate of Austin High School and Knoxville College.

We are honored to spotlight Robert J. Booker as an alumnus whose legacy lives on in every step toward justice, every story preserved, and every student inspired to make a difference.
